The Unmarried Doctor

With a new rotation comes lots of paperwork, getting lost in the hospital and plenty of new faces and introductions.

In recent months I have noticed when discussing my career path during these ice breaker conversations I often get questioned about my marital status. While the question seems innocent enough, I can’t help but feel that there may be some hidden bias underlying the inquiry. When I say I’m unmarried, I often get praised for putting my career first. I can’t help but notice my male colleagues personal lives are not only not questioned, but they are certainly not put in opposition with their career.

So what gives? Does being a female physician mean sacrificing a future spouse or a happy home life? 🏡
