Briogeo Scalp Revival Shampoo & Conditioner Product Review

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo

Product Details: The “Scalp Revival” line by Briogeo contains Binchotan charcoal which is derived from the wood of the Japanese Ubame Oak tree. The process of making this charcoal involves heating the wood and then covering with a mixture of earth, sand and ash creating a charcoal with a variety of minerals. The small particle size of the binchotan charcoal makes it a great at removing impurities and built up hair products while detoxifying the scalp.

This exfoliating shampoo contains:

  • Coconut Oil and Panthenol to condition and hydrate
  • Peppermint & Spearmint oil to balance the pH of the scalp
  • Tea Tree oil, a natural antimicrobial to reduce flaky/itchy skin
  • Binchotan charcoal detoxifies, and removes impurities and hair product buildup

My experience: I only wash my hair about twice per week so I think a true testament to this product is that I rushed to wash my hair as soon as I opened this shampoo and smelled how good it is! I was surprised to see the shampoo resembles the consistency of a mud mask and was concerned that it would tangle in my hair. I was very pleasantly surprised because just a little bit of the product massaged into my scalp created a very thick rich lather. The peppermint and spearmint oil created a very pleasant tingling sensation. This shampoo washed out easily. Since I use a fair amount of dry shampoo to extend the time between washes, this shampoo is perfect to remove the product buildup between rinses.

Pros:

  • Works into a rich lather
  • Removes hair product build-up
  • Smells minty fresh
  • According to a 2002 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of dermatology, there is evidence that Tea Tree Oil can aid in growing longer/thicker hair

Cons:

  • Price point is $42.00
  • My hair feels dry along the crown of my head where I used this shampoo but did not condition over, and more tangle prone than normal

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Peppermint Oil Cooling Jelly  Conditioner

Product Details: This is a “scalp soothing” jelly conditioner that can hydrate and detoxify the scalp.

This jelly conditioner contains:

  • Coconut Oil and Panthenol to condition and hydrate
  • Peppermint & Spearmint oil to balance the pH of the scalp
  • Tea Tree oil, a natural antimicrobial to reduce flaky/itchy skin
  • Binchotan charcoal detoxifies, and removes impurities and hair product buildup

My experience:  Since I have long, thick hair and I was concerned that due to the jelly consistency of this product I would need to use a substantial amount to be able to cover all my hair from root to tip as the bottle suggested. The bottle suggested 2 “quarter size” dollops of conditioner, so I decided to start with 2 and found I needed just a bit more to cover the ends of my hair. The tricky part came with trying to spread the conditioner from the ends to the roots. Typically I just condition the ends and leave the roots be, but I wanted to trial this product as directed. I needed another quarter size dollop to be able to work the product into my roots. I let sit for a minute and it rinsed out easily.

I was pleasantly surprised how good my hair smelled after I let it air dry, and I was easily able to brush without using my typical leave in conditioner or styling products. An unexpected outcome of using this product is that my hair dried into the most pretty soft curls. Typically my hair is borderline straight/wavy so seeing these soft ringlets show up with no effort on my own was a pleasant change!

Pros

  • Product is vegan, cruelty free
  • No Parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes
  • Smells refreshingly minty and creates a pleasant tingling sensation
  • No more dry, itchy scalp (Goodbye Dandruff!)
  • Leaves hair soft and silky

Cons

  • Jelly texture absorbs quickly into hair, requiring more product to be applied to fully cover hair
  • Price point is $36.00

I received these two  complementary products in an Influenster’s VoxBox in exchange for my honest review.
